Day of Working Women, now known as Women’s Day, is the day celebrating the economic, political and social empowerment of women and their achievements. The first informal celebration of the national Women’s day was celebrated in New York the last Sunday in February 1909, as a memorial of a strike of union women in textile industry, which was held the previous year. At the second International Conference of Socialist Women in 1910 Clara Tekin and Luise Zeit proposed a day of Working Women, which would be celebrated every year. The first official Women’s day was celebrated on 19th of March 1911 in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and in Denmark, where the women demanded the right to vote, the possibility of holding public office and the ending of discrimination at the workplace. In 1917 the holiday was marked by protest of women in Russia. They protested under the slogan “Bread and Peace” and demanded the end of 1st World War, the end of food shortage and the end of czarism. Protest later led to the October revolution, the resignation of the Tsar and the allocation of voting rights by temporary government. The day was later declared national holiday by Alexander Kollantain and […]
End of the year celebration 2018
Is this your first time in Maribor and you’ll like to discover it by yourself? Are you a citizen of Maribor and you’ll like to see the city from completely new perspective? Than the Treasure Hunt, prepared by Rajzefiber, is exactly what you need. Hotel Bau Maribor Team ended the year 2018 with a lot of curiosity, exploring and a little competition. Divided in two groups (named according to time of the year – Santas and Rudolphs) we competed in teambuilding, mentioned above. If you are interested in other teambuilding providers from Maribor and its surroundings, you can find them on our website, under the tab of rooms – teambuilding providers. Foto Each team received a neat box with envelopes containing clues and tasks that are just right difficult to make the subject interesting and sufficiently simple that they do not throw in the towel. And, despite the cold day, we enthusiastically went towards the goal. At the beginning of the road we met a magician, who has, as a reward for a correct answer, literally pulled a next tip from his hat. The path led us through the city center of the Styrian capital. Tasks took near most […]
DECEMBER HIGHLIGHTS 2018
The most beutiful time ofthe year is over again. Time of giving, time of warm hugs and family, time of good wishes, time of scarves and gloves, winter coats, hot drinks – Christmas time. Many shops were decorated already from the middle of October, but Christmas lights were lit on November 23th at 5 p.m. Foto Without any doubt, in December there was something for everyone: For more artistic and cultural souls there was the opera Nabucco or one of the most beautiful ballets in this holiday season – The Nutcracker. Both perfomances took place at the Slovene National Theatre (SNG). Foto Laughter and good mood are always welcome, therefore we could watch some good stand-up comedies with Vid Valic, Tin Vodopivec and Primoz Forte at The National Home (Narodni dom). The main december events took place at the Leon Štukelj Square (Trg Leona Štuklja), where, as every year, various concerts for different tastes were performed, for those people who are eager for real parties and never get cold. For many visitors, just a night-time walk through illuminated streets was a pleasant experience. To warm up a bit, at one of the many stands there was hot cocoa, […]
BLOG OLD VINE FESTIVAL 2018 …
… will replace our autumn highlights. it will present you a wonderful festival, which lasted whole autumn (28.09.- 12.11. 2018). If you were to listen to the bar discussions, you would think that everything is wrong in Maribor. The mayor is not good, what will happen after the election! Everything is wrong, according to bar conversations. We can see the city from a different point of view when we listen to the impressions of the former Maribor resident, who returned after 50 years from abroad, even if only on vacation. He told me quite briefly: “I already forgot how nice it is here. Maribor is a wonderful place. Not just Maribor, all of Slovenia.” One could see the pride in his eyes, while he was telling that he once lived here too. In Maribor. In Slovenia. Photo But one thing that unites everyone from Maribor and makes us at least a little proud. Our Old Vine. Although the lady is already in years, we must admit she is incredibly vital. If one can see it as a person, one could say that there are still mischievous sparks in her eyes. She persists on her own and thinks: if you […]
End of year 2018

They help us to get better. We hope that in the future we will continue in such a pleasant rhythm. Happy 2019! Hotel Bau Maribor Team
NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO WINTER OR ABOUT VINTAGE CARS PART 2
Do not get me wrong. I think the winter is beautiful too. I do not have anything against it. It just brings a kind of melancholy. The days are shorter, and so foggy, as someone really mad attacked the machine for making sugar foam. Those who read my first blog about old-vintage cars already know why I’m not looking forward to it. For those who have not read it yet, I can tell you that a large part of our family goes to winter sleep. All four of us are going to miss them. Citroëns 2CV and DS, have been driving our family reliably, comfortable, fun and especially safe all summer long wherever it was needed. To work, errands, visits, trips, citro-meetings and even to the sea. We were certainly not bored. In these two cars we were laughing, eating, sleeping, sometimes even lost something, and got to know new places and new people. Since of course it is logical that you do not go straight home after the citro-meeting, and especially, not using the shortest route. The last meeting we attended was a nice season-coloured. It was a chestnut picnic organized by the Maribor section of the […]
September highlights 2018
Summer holidays are near the end. Some children are looking forward to the school, most of them the thought of the school brings the tears in their eyes, like after cutting three kilograms of onion. This year holidays were even a bit longer. We are convinced that everyone of them will get a lot of adventures, new experiences and friendships. Some families extended their vacations, as the second half of the month was wonderful. And just a combination of autumn moisture and sunny days took care for the crowds in the forests and vineyards. This year we experienced one of the earliest grape harvests, after September 15th. vineyards were mostly emptied. The crop was plentiful, so we can toast with the excellent wine we are producing. And why in the woods? Ask mushroom lovers and those who went in the forest just to be able to brag to their friends on Facebook or Instagram how many and how big mushrooms they found. Whereever you look, there were plenty of porcino mushrooms. All those who are to lazy to go into the forest, however, take a walk to the Maribor market. If not real mushrooms-the mushroom shaped sunshades of our market […]
LENT Photo The magical Lent is a part of the city that lies along the river Drava and has played one of the most important roles in its development as the oldest part of the city. The word Lent is derived from the German word Lander, which means space for landing. Maribor used to be an important rafting town with a port on Lent, where around 1100 rafts and boats annually landed. A walk along Lent will take you among the remains of a Maribor medieval wall with defense towers. The walls of Maribor were special because of their almost rectangular shape. The original walls, due to the constant Turkish invasions and new invasive techniques, were not able to protect the city, so they fortified it with corner towers and fortresses that protected the city for the next 150 years. The water tower is located on Usnjarska Street near the Drava River. The tower was under threat because of the rise of river’s surface. The architect Jože Požavk saved the tower, who suggested that it should be lifted, and that way the tower weighing 1500 ton was raised by 2.6 meters in 1967. Today there is a wine cellar in […]
Honeycomb Slovenia is small. So small that even jokes began to circulate at the expense of its small size. But we can boast with quite a few things that we can find only with us. Whether it is native animals (breed and wild), plants (including seven types of vines) and, of course, also products. I could write about the lect hearts, about the Idrija lace or about the Prekmurska gibanica (I have to mention it? I would be gladly have one, two … J). Well, I will not – maybe some other time. We recorded the first World Day of Bees. We sent you to beekeeping museums. Those who have visited any of them know it already. I mean beehive panel. Source You can find it in Slovenia and a few in Austria, where it has spread from us. It is one of the folk art directions, which began to develop in the middle of the 18th century. The Slovene Ethnographic Museum has an enviable collection of 754 copies. If you do not have time to visit them, you can view their collection on their website. Many of them are also seen in the Beekeeping Museum in Radovljica. […]
July and August highlights 2018
In this blog I will summarize the events of the two most imperial months of the year. July was just calm and relaxing. As if the city needs a little peace to recover from all the events in June. To catch a breath, prepare and jump – in wild August! The Drava Festival has still lasted, what was going on (and what will be) on Poštna, you can check out at their Facebook profile – Poštna. source Fans of small round violet fruits (in whatever form) could enjoy at the first Blueberry Festival, which was held at the upper station of the Pohorje Vzpenjača cable car. Just as on July 8 some people left the Old Bridge, rarely and very few do. I will not say the bravest, because I am convinced that someone else would go for a bet or REALLY good photos for Instagram or Facebook. The organizers allowed the leap from the Old Bridge only for professionals. Yes, you read it right. There was some jumping into the Drava. Are you interested in more? Here you can read and watch the clip. Summer weekends at the Art Camp are dedicated to the youngest and young […]

Forma Viva in Maribor
Forma Viva in Maribor Photo All, who walk along the streets of Maribor on daily basis, don’t pay any attention on little gems, that city so generously offers. We take them for granted. For something, that has always been there. And they don’t deserve that. That is why I decided to wake everybody up to look around. And next time you walk through our dear city, observe a little bit. Maybe it will surprise you. In Maribor and his near surroundings we can find many sculptures from different materials. What are they? Where they came from? Who are authors? How many are out there? Do you know the answer to any of these questions? I took a little time these days, search for information and went on an excursion on Forma Viva from Maribor. If you’ll read this blog, you will learn the answers on other questions too. You can find above mentioned sculptures all over the city (and near). They are the result of many sculpture colonies, which were happening in Maribor (influenced by Karl Prantl) at the initiative of Janez Lenassi and Jakob Savinšek, between years 1967 – 1986. There are different authors, who are […]
Weekend full activity
WEEKEND ACTIVITIES IN MARIBOR The weekend from 25th – 27th of May 2018 was very fun and active. Several different events and activities took place in Maribor. FESTIVAL EZL EK »Ezl ek« or so called Donkey corner in front of the Astoria Café in Maribor has been the main meeting place of Maribor’s high school students for many years. Here were young people hanging out for hours and hours, and discussed sports, events in the city, love, in short talked about anyything. At the end of the 1980s, social life of the place somewhat diminished, but the memory of it remained. Festival is a musical, photographic, theatrical, film and artistic gift to this famous place and to all creative individuals who have visited and co-created it. The 4th Ezlek Festival offered different events for all tastes: -First day, May 25th at 8.30PM, the festival was opened with the Opera Night in the City Park for all lovers of opera and classical music, as well as for all curious passers-by. SNG Maribor (Slovene National Theatre Maribor) organized a traditional concert of opera arias and choirs. The concert was held by the SNG Maribor Symphony Orchestra and under the conductor Simon Krečič. […]
Beekeeping museum As we mentioned in our first blog on bees, you can find a lot of bee-related museums all over Slovenia, and they contain rich collections from our recent history. In the following blog, we will briefly introduce you with some of them. If the decide for our hotel, do not forget to add one of them to your destination plans and get richer for another interesting experience! Beekeeping Museum Krapje – Beekeeping Tigeli: Here you will be able to see the octagonal beehouse that dates back to the end of the 19th century and is the only example of such a beehouse in nature. You will not find bees in it, but a collection of beekeeping tools from the past, donated by older beekeepers from the surrounding area. Photo Beekeeping museum Radovljica: In the Baroque manor house in Radovljica, there are, among other things, various bee houses, beekeeping tools and beehive panels. They also have a biology/biological/bio (?)room where in summer you can observe Carniolan honey bee. Photo Anton Janša’s beehive: Everyone who read our first blog about bees already knows who Anton Janša was. Those of you who do not know yet can read here. […]
Valentine’s Day … pfff. This is only day of love. Now May, for May is said, that is the month of love. And when I started to write in this direction, I realized: I don’t even know why so is. What follows: quick research. The only, at least approximate, explanation is astrological. The most of May is in the sign of Taurus, whose planet is Venus, goddess of love for the great Romans. If nothing else, days are longer, outside is warmer. Everything grows sprouts and blooms. Also hormones are very active (can we blame Venus for that?). Do you know any better explanation? Let us know and send it to email@example.com. Labor Day, maypoles were placed, bonfires, May Day marches. If we have the smallest reason and, of course, possibility to have a good time, we, from Styria, will absolutely make it happen. And do not be afraid, we do not keep these things for ourselves. All of you are always and very welcome. If you missed it this year, but would still like to see what happened (to be timely planned next year!), click here. Personal archive For Slovenes, we can say that we are a […]
At the moment we look at wonderful vineyards that are surrounding Maribor we can know, that the winter is ending. Vines are already pruned and are waiting for the first warm sunbeams to caress them and help them grow first sprouts. Our famous oldest vine on the world, on the Lent, was carefully pruned by her caretaker, guardian of the Old Vine Stane Kocutar. Some of scions of the Old Vine were intended for protocol donations (look lower on this blog – we got one too!) and also visitors could buy them. Photo If you would like to have your own Old Vine scion, you have to visit Maribor at next pruning! If you decide for comfortable and relaxing stay in hotel Bau Maribor, you won’t miss! At the end of March, all lovers of ‘food gods’ (chocolate) came to our expense. On 23 and 24 March, the International Chili & Chocolate Festival took place at Leon Štukelj Square. It was attended by more than 35 different authors from Slovenia and abroad. Those who attended it said that it was delicious (and quickly brushed chocolate mustache). Photo Are you sorry that you missed this year’s festival? Follow […]

World Bee day
World Bee day People in our vanity often forget about tiny things. Even though are these tiny things often the most important ones. Photo This blog is dedicated to tiny, often overlooked, but wonderful and indispensable – bee. We can proudly state, that, on the initiative of the Slovenian Beekeeping Association, has Republic of Slovenia sent a request to the United Nations to announce May 20 as the World Bee Day. And she succeeded! Why exactly did they choose this day? May is a special month in the annual cycle of bees, since then they swarm on the northern hemisphere, while on the south it is time to collect valuable crops, which they diligently collected over the year. On May 20, our most famous beekeeper Anton Janša was born, who was amongst others the imperial beekeeper who was in charge in the Augarten Emperor’s Garden. He was the author of many books from which all the beekeepers had to study (according to the decree of Maria Theresa), and they are still current. Photo Slovenia is famous for its many types of honey and its products. Among other things, Slovenian beekeepers were the first in the world to produce […]

WINTER HIGHLIGHTS 2017
WINTER HIGHLIGHTS 2017/18 The weather has become colder and days shorter. We were joking with friends: ‘The winter is coming!’ (Game of Thrones). On the 8th December afternoon, the rain drops began to gradually change into snowflakes, which finally covered our Maribor with snow, it was confirmed: winter is already here. Many people were expectating the Festive December and handful of events which this month brings, and the children, above all, were happy because of the visit from Three good men/Santa? . And given the fact that Maribor intended this winter to spend the most of all Slovenian municipalities for decoration and organisation of various events (I am convinced that everyone could find something for themselves), there were quite a few reasons for joy and above all for positive expectations. We were able to see nicely decorated streets on 24th November, we were the first city in Slovenia with Christmas decoration. We were able, after the speech of our Mayor A. Fištravec, to walk along the city streets with him and the Snow Fairy and enjoy a rich cultural program. Regardless of whether we believe that the lights have been lighted up too soon or just in time, we […]
When you can’t wait for spring or oldtimers, part one
When you can’t wait for spring or oldtimers, part one Winter can be gorgeous. Snow carpet everywhere, icicles hanging from the roofs, evening walks through festively decorated towns. Not to mention winter joy on the snow. Enjoying the white slopes of the beautiful Pohorje …. Idyllic, isn’t it? But thats only in the case of ‘normal’ winters, not what we had so far. Warm 14 ° C in the first week of January, drags everyone of us outside into the warm sun, so we can complain to each other that such weather conditions are not normal. Still, it seems nice when the sun is caressing us when we drink our coffee at Lent or Grajski trg. We finally got some colder weather in February, when we received a package of a good half-meter of snow at -20˚C in Maribor. At the time, I was immensely grateful that I do not need to go to work with a car (2cv) that has such isolation as an raincoat. You see that there is something, but it does not work. If I say purely subjective, the situation in January was a bit sad for me. Not because of the weather. As a passionate […]
Easter is the most important Christian holiday. On this day the Christians celebrate Jesus resurrection-on big Friday he was crossed, the third day after that he was resurrected. Easter is for the Christians a holiday full of joy and hope; they believe that Jesus with his resurrection fought the body and spirit death and brought hope on resurrection after death for all. Easter traditions distinguish itself from one country to another. After the tradition is on big Friday commanded strict fast, on big Saturday is the blessings of dishes which are getting eaten for breakfast on Easter Sunday. The Easter dishes also have symbolic meanings in Slovenia, for example dried meat symbolizes Christ body, red eastern eggs are drops of blood, horseradish symbolizes nails and all the pastry are thorn crown. The holiday itself has its roots in Judaism and also in old pagan habits when they celebrated the arrival of spring. The exchanging of Easter egg follows from old pagan habits, when they worshipped the goddess Eostra. Easter eggs represent love and friendship but also the whole existing as the cosmic egg. Easter is celebrated on first Sunday after the first spring full moon. So the holiday can be […]
We managed to escape from locked rooms in one hour, can you do it too? WE HAVE VISITED ESCAPE ROOM – ENIGMARIUM MARIBOR We always like to indulge in some kind of fun at our gatherings, that’s why we went for an adventure in the Escape Room Enigmarium Maribor in December. Popular escape rooms are lately a very desirable activity for both locals and visitors to the city. In order to show to our guests what more activities the city has to offer, we decided to explore 2 rooms – Virus Outbreak and Redlight Casino. The game is organized in a way that the team of up to five players is locked in a thematic room where they must discover hidden objects and hints in 60 minutes, decode codes and riddles, solve puzzles, unlock secret boxes and locks, and above all logically think, collaborate and find the door key which leads to freedom. Vir fotografije: Arhiv Hotela Bau In the Virus Outbreak Escape room, our special team, named Alpha Team, managed to find the most dangerous virus of all times- Omega, deactivate it, and find the vaccine before the laboratory of young researcher John Smith went into the […]
Winter activities in Maribor
The city of Maribor is a geographically diverse destination. There are plenty of options for active leisure time and getting to know the city. We listed some activities that are most interesting in this time of the year: Skiing at the Maribor Pohorje. Autumn highlights 2017
Autumn highlights 2017 Autumn in Maribor is in wine colors and rich with cultural and sporting events. As the place of the oldest vine in the world, in autumn, Maribor also has the Old Vine Festival, which hosts many traditional events, excellent wine offer and a lot of culinary delicacies. We started the autumn with a special festival dedicated to micro beer breweries. At the end of September, the 4th Macro Beer Fest took place. More about the beer festival can be found in the following link Foto PARTICIPATE IN THE MAKRO BEER FESTIVAL IN 2018 As we already mentioned in the introduction, the most recognizable landmark of Maribor is certainly the oldest vine in the world, and this year, the Old Vine Festival was held in its honor, which traditionally started on the first Saturday in October with the Vineyard harvesting in front of the Old Vine House on Lent . You can read more about the event in the following link Foto PARTICIPATE IN CEREMONIOUS GRAPE HARVEST NEXT YEAR 30. 09. 2018 https://maribor-pohorje.si/svecana-trgatev-stare-trte-30-9-2018.aspx Maribor was once one of the most important rafting towns along the Drava river, and up to 2000 rafts were allowed to tansport […]
Hotel Bau team is exploring
Our hometown – Maribor is a peaceful, clean, friendly, green city. We love it, we know it, but we are always surprised what kind of “treasures” are still hidden. We, the employees at the Bau Hotel on the first Thursday in November acted as tourists in our home town. We wanted to check what can we offer and recommend to our guests and to what places of interest in our hometown can we send them. First we had a lunch in Restaurant Rotovž, an excellent restaurant offering fresh and local dishes. The restaurant is located in the Main Square, in the city center. The Town Hall (Rotovž) was built between 1563 and 1565. The interesting feature of its tower is that it is not in the middle. The customer did not pay enough gold coins to a building master, and therefore the master, as a revenge, did not build the tower in the middle. Have you already noticed this? Today, in the Town Hall, weddings and Mayor’s receptions are organized. After lunch, we strolled down the the Koroška Cesta and stopped at the […]

Old vine – the pride of Maribor
Old vine – the pride of Maribor In the oldest part of town, along the magical river Drava, a special treasure can be found that knows the stories of Maribor throughout the centuries. Older than 400 years old it defies time. The Old Vine can be found in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest wine-growing vine in the world and is a symbol of the rich wine tradition of Maribor and its surroundings. Photo It is the only plant in the world that has its own museum and its vine sort is “žametkova” or the “modra kavčina”. Žametkova is one of the oldest domestic noble vine sorts in Slovenia and from which today a well-known red wine cviček is produced. The wine from the Old Vine is used only for protocol purposes and is pleasantly full, with a high sugar and quality level, to which its location contributes a lot. It was planted at a time when Maribor was besieged by the Turks and despite the fact that the Old Vine House was at the time part of the city defensive wall, the fierce fighting did not harmed it. At the end of the Middle age Maribor suffered […]

International Workers’ Day
Labour Day, the International Labour Day, May 1 of each year is celebrated in most countries of the world, a rare exception to the US. Feast of the original memory of the bloody demonstrations in Chicago in the US these days in 1886, known as the Haymarket affair, but the biggest celebration of the social and economic achievements of the international labor movement. In pagan Europe the first May Day celebrated spring fertility, such as soil animals and humans. The villages built Maypoles, and danced around them. Sometimes they lit bonfires, which probably derive from the Celtic tradition of celebrating the god of the sun, which began at midnight with the lighting of a fire. In ancient Rome they had a festival of Flora, the goddess of flowers (this may be a source of laying baskets of flowers in front of the house door, which is sometimes passed between May Day traditions), while in Germany the pagan celebration Valpurgin night (Walpurgisnacht) or “Halloween”. The Christian church has tried to remove or replace this “wild” and “dissolute” celebrations with their own (such as the veneration of the Virgin Mary), but mostly they retained in a milder form. Why do they have […]
Mother’s day is informal holiday, which came to Europe from America. Mother’s day is a holiday of gratitude to all the women in the role of mother. History of mother’s day In 1907 Ana Jarvis in America distributed 500 white carnations in memory to her late mother. Her greatest wish was that the holiday dedicated to mothers would be legalized. Her wish cam to live in 1914 when president Woodraw Wilson sign the act about national holiday in honours of mothers which lost their sons in WW 1 – the celebration of holiday is on every second Sunday in May. In a few years Ana Jarvis discover that the holiday become more holiday of people who wants to earn money that the celebration in honour of motherhood. She wanted that the holiday should be abolished, but the holiday already become popular around the world. Slovenia and mother’s day In Slovenia the mother’s day has already been celebrated between world’s wars. Every year the schools dedicated one hour to mothers. It is a known fact that on March 12th – Gregorjevo, birds are getting married. The legend says that the first bird that the girls see on that day will revealed what kind of man will she married. After Julian calendar the gregorjevo was on the first day of spring. Gregory the Great who stands behind the story of gregorjevo, was a saint born in Rome. He was known as a great pope and church teacher. Saint George is also a patron of mines, builders, buttons and badges maker, scholars, teachers, students, especially he was a patron of musician, singers, choirs and choral singing (Gregorian coral); he also helped women with their fertility. He is portrayed in pontifical garments wearing bishop’s stick, a book, a writing pen and a pigeon. Gregorjevo is not the only holiday that birds get marry, some say thet they get marry on Vincencijevo on 22nd of January and of course on valentine’s day. In Slovenia the holiday have a long history, especially in the Gorenjska region, where they descend the enlightened boats called “gregorčk” the night before gregorjevo, because on that day Saint George “throw the light in the water”.
Today Valentine’s Day is not only a day of lovers but also a day of friends, friendship and all the people who love each other. However, its original source was not intended for lovers, but was celebrated as a day of fasting in honor of St. Valentin. Sv. Valentin lived in the 3rd century and was imprisoned because of his faith. He fell in love with the blind daughter of his warder, for which he wrote poems and with that poems he restore her sight. In the late Middle Ages the idea of romantic love was developed and so the holiday got its present appearance. Today we exchanged on Valentine’s Day little valentines – love letters. Every year we approximately send billion of valentines. In Slovenia St. Valentine’s Day is known for a long time, but its meaning was different, on that day began the first work in the vineyards and gardens according to rural calendar. Valentine’s Day is the holiday of lovers, but you could also say that it is a holiday of miracles. Sv. Valentin had cured his chosen lady of blindness with his songs. Today is Valentine’s Day got more commercial note, but still the most beautiful […]

Christmas is one of the popular traditional holidays in the church calendar. In Catholic and Protestant countries, we celebrate it on December 25th as a memory of the birth of Jesus Christ. The Bible (Luke’s Gospel) says that Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem at a time when Mary was already very pregnant. In Bethlehem she could not get a lodging, so she went in a stable. Mary gave birth to Jesus there and laid him in a manger, because she had no other beds for him. In memory of this event, Christians are setting up cribs. In Slovenia, the first crib were built in 1644 in the Jesuit church of St. Jakob in Ljubljana. (Uredništvo, Zgodovina.si, 2016) Foto: MMC Christmas tree also plays one of the main roles in Christmas. We decorate a spruce or fir tree with ornaments and candles. This tradition was established at the end of the 19th century in Catholic countries in Europe, it is considered a Protestant folk custom with Indo-European roots. Foto: southsimcoephysio.ca In the recent times, another form of Christmas celebration, which is not related to Christianity, has been established in Slovenia. We call […]
New Year’s Eve
New Year’s Eve in Maribor The beginning of the New Year is a special event that is celebrated all over the world. Every year we bring new year’s resolutions, and with a lot of optimism we are looking forward to new adventures that await us. Did you know that the name of the New Year’s Eve-Saint Sylvester’s Day comes from the Name day of Pope Silvester I, which is December 31st? The New Year isn’t celebrated on the same day everywhere. Orthodox Christians begin the New Year on January 14th, the Muslim New Year begins with the sunset on January 30th, and Jewish on the sunset on September 22nd. In ancient times, the Romans celebrated the beginning of the new year on March 1st. Foto Chinese New Year is the most important traditional Chinese holiday. In China it is known as the “Spring Festival”. In ancient China, the festival began with lichun (4th or 5th February); the first sun period of the Chinese calendar. It announced the end of the winter period, similar to our Pust. Since 1913, the then Chinese People’s Government, ordered the festival to begin on the first day of the first month according to the Chinese […]
ST. NICHOLAS Saint Nicholas, as we usually call him, is certainly one of the most beloved saints. Children are looking forward to seeing him with special joy. On the evening of the fifth of December, he goes from house to house and brings them small presents. If they were good and diligent he rewards them, if they didn’t behave well, his companion the Krampus punishes them. So the legendary tradition is interwoven with the pre-Christian beliefs. The image of this saint has been so alive in us since childhood. Photo Nothing is unpleasant, scary or alien about him. Charity and brotherly help, the qualities that we so much like to feel as human beings, are so normal for St. Nicholas. The saint is a bishop who is welcomed in every house. St. Nicholas comes to most houses in the evening before his anniversary. There he fills the plates on tables, socks or shoes on the shelves, of course, on the condition that the owner was decent. He gives presents even to those who were not so good, but he leaves a whip for their parents, just in case. The influence of St. Nicolas is so great that Slovene children of […]

Hotel Bau Team walking on industrial paths of Maribor
WALKING ON INDUSTRIAL PATHS OF MARIBOR Just 20 years ago, the city of Maribor was the biggest industrial center in former Yugoslavia, known as Yugoslavian Manchester. Today, Maribor still has its potentials, hidden in historical facts all across the town. Our team of hotel Bau went on a sightseeing again, this time on the industrial paths of Maribor. We were driven in time of our recent history, which proves, what a worker is capable of. At first, we drive past former big manufactures in Maribor, which were 25 years ago employing 95.000 people. We saw Lilet (known also as manufacture of shoes for English royal family), Intes, Vesna, Zlatorog, Primat, Metalna and many others, from the special bus – old-timer. We were so thrilled, that the absence of air condition has not bothered us (it was a very hot day, indeed). But, it was not hot for a long time; we soon arrived at the legendary manufacture, called TAM, where we went 15 meters under the surface, where this manufacture was operating during the World War II. 8.512 km² underground tunnels were built in just a few months during the year 1943, today we can see only 3, 5 km […]

HOTEL BAU TEAM WENT ONCE AGAIN AS TOURISTS AROUND MARIBOR
Gourmet pampering in “Culinary playground” VSGT and escape back to the medieval times On Wednesday, 13. January 2016, the employees of Hotel Bau went on an afternoon gathering and gourmet pampering. We started our tour in the restaurant “Seven” – a restaurant run by Vocational College for Catering and Tourism Maribor. This restaurant is a huge acquisition for the school, as their students are using the knowledge they learned in theory also in practical situations. They are learning how to make a good coffee, natural juices, they get to know raw foods, how to combine them and make all kinds of meals, they learn how to bake deserts, and they are also developing skills needed in catering and reception of guests. Under the watchful eye of mentors they gain more knowledge and experiences in the restaurant, and in the moment they finish the school, they are more confident and prepared for new discoveries and creative professional challenges. We wanted to see this process with our own eyes, and we were impressed. Already when we came in we got a warm welcome and throughout the whole lunch we had a feeling that we were constantly in their centre of attention. All […]
